This volume is the place to go for a glossary of sports and game terms. Excluding almost nothing (more on this later), Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology provides definitions for 8,000 terms arranged alphabetically, starting with AAA and ending in zorbing. Definitions consist of approximately 100 words, with the sport or game in parentheses to put the term in context. In many cases, the definition will include name origin and will also provide cross-references to other sport or game terms, which appear in bold. Probably the best way to describe this source is to provide a sampling of what is here: terminology from football, ice hockey, boxing, swimming, surfing, darts, billiards, judo, climbing, cross-country running, skiing, and tenpin bowling, to name just a few. It also includes teams (Yankees), events (Super Bowl), venues (Churchill Downs), awards (Stanley Cup), and administrative bodies (FIFA). The book does not promise to be comprehensive. And, in fact, the author is quite explicit on what it does not cover, which might be idiosyncratic. For example, he states that there are no entries for board games, card games, or for blood sports such as hunting or bullfighting. He does, however, cover angling.
